Don't normally do these, but figured 'eh, what the heck'

1. I'm Australian.

2. I spend a majority of my day ARTing about(However, I'm easily distracted from said ARTing).

3. Prefer Traditional ARTing over Digital(but I tend to do more digital).

4. There's something about wearing a bow-tie that just feels right.

5. I effin LOVE corn!

6. Drinks on occasion, but DOESN'T smoke.

7. Don't Drive (Don't even have a license).

8. Born in the Philippines.

might aswell make this some sort of F.A.Q (since I don't really have one of those)

so any questions, ask away (I suppose)

So, curiously, are you part Filipino?
Both parents are Filipino. I was born in the Philippines
but Raised in Australia.

Are there any specific qualifications needed to get into the industry?
I'm sure you can find this answer better from other sources, but for me I figure specific qualifications needed to get into this industry would be to have Story telling skills in a sequential manner. Having a solid draftsmanship doesn't hurt either, but w/o the storytelling aspect, then how would you be able to tell a story smoothly.

How did you get noticed in the industry?
In all honesty, I think by fluke.
Industry-wise I am still a nobody (which is all good by me)
But how I happened to land work in UDON is by showing them my work when I attended SDCC in 2006.
Just started there I suppose.
Nothing instantly, but from there.

Did you have any contacts before you got noticed in the industry?
before working with UDON, I did work for Bluewater Comics.
My work for Bluewater didn't get me contacts.
I didn't have industry contacts to get work for Bluewater.
However, I did know NgBoy through DA before joining UDON.
During SDCC06, whilst stopping by to visit Joe at the booth, he told Jim Zubby to look at my work.

Since you work for Udon, would you say that all the other Udon comic artist got drafted 'incidentally' like you.
Or are there other ways of acquiring a job as a comic illustrator?

I can't answer this question as I have no experience in the matter of applying really.

What's the deal with job security or benefits?
Basically treat this as you would if you had your own small business.
Look into that aspect of taking care of yourself.

Did you go to any art schools?
I didn't attend an 'art school'.
However I did do an art course (Computer Mediated Art) at the Local University.
Unfortunately, I didn't learn anything I didn't already know.
BUT it did give me time to explore the art that I wanted to do. So that's quite vital.
The ONLY reason I went to Uni was to make me folks happy and get a degree in something.
*shrugs*

What kind of studies do you do while you were at Uni?
Like, where did you go for life drawing, to study animals, mechanical stuff, perspective, etc, etc?
Did you do them all on your own or did you find guidelines somewhere?

Uni had life drawing (enjoyed drawing from observation)
no animal, mechanical or perspective study was taught there.
All that info I learned during Highschool.
A lot of what I know is done through personal research and a lot of trial and error.

Also, did/do you study different artist' styles?
If so, how did you go about it?

I just observe and draw to get a basis.
Influences ranged from animation, comic/manga arts etc.

How much does working at UDON/some other place like that pay?
Won't go into specifics, but Enough to do me right by my current situation.

Do you exercise?
I ride the Bike (actual/exercise bike)daily.
Nothing crazy or hardcore, just to get the body moving.
Can't be sitting down ARTing all day, health be quite important!

What is the work environment like?/Do you need to live close to the company you work for or can you work from home?
well MY work environment is quite comfortable, as I work from home. Have the home luxuries here whenever I need/want them are great. Own hours etc is also good, so long as the work get's done.

How did you manage to get all those super nice colour and outline when you do colour digitally and inking it digitally?
I don't ink digitally, I level my pencil scans out.
I use a Lasso to colour.
Click this lastscionz.deviantart.com/gall… for all the Tutorials I've made thus far.

what materials do you use?
Staedtler 4H pencil.
0.5mm Papermate Pacer + 0.5mm HB papermate leads
Faber-Castell pvc-free Eraser
Coloured Sharpies
Coloured BIC Mark-It's
Reflex A4 copy paper
Photoshop CS3
Wacom Intuos4

how long does it usually take to finish a piece of work?
This isn't easy to answer, because time varies.
Depending on what I have to do and what else I'm doing at the time, there's no real solid answer.
When it comes down to it, things are usually done from 6 - 8 hours (digital).
Less in some cases, more on others (pagework can reach 12 hours)
I don't really work to time myself, I work for an end result.
I am hopeful in that I can achieve what I'm after in less time, but that is something I'm working on.

Tell us about life, how old, are you married, kids and stuff?
Born end of 1984, Single, No kids

what are your sleeping habbits?
Currently, fairly crappy. (when drawing pages)
When colouring pages, they're pretty much according to the Melbourne time.

where do you get your ideas from?
Everywhere!
my head, manga, anime, movies, Life in general.

was there any other job prospects outside art?
To be honest, I didn't even look. =P

how long can you answer questions before the novelty wears thin?
Soon, I think. haha

Do you ever live stream?
You bet I do!
Whenever I so a live art stream, I'll create a journal saying that I'll be streaming then.
The stream currently has no location.

Do you ever do conventions outside of Australia? Other than SDCC, I mean.
Yep! I've been to SDCC several times now, and have also attended a handful of other North American conventions.
I'm not sure when my next international convention will be, but who knows at this point, it could be anywhere.

how did you get so good at drawing and how would you suggest that I get better if I want to improve?
Draw as often as you can. Be open to learn and experiment and explore.

Have you ever considered working with copic or prisma markers? I notice you use sharpies but is that a matter of convenience in price or general preference?
Prisma - Tired em, they're cool I suppose but not as good as Copics in quality (for me for the most part)
Copics - I use them, primarily for flesh tones and greys
Sharpies - What I like to use, as they're both vibrant in colour and also quite affordable.

We've got some things in common! I dont smoke or drink and I exercise. I found it particularly interesting that you didnt go to art college to improve. Self taught, thats makes you even more awesome. Thanx for this.

Hey Chama! Im a Long time silent fan of your work.

Other than Photoshop, do you have any recommendations for Digital Inking software/coloring? I currently use Illustrator (with no tablet) but it seems to take for ever -_-

Unfortunately with Photoshop being one of the only programs I use (apart from sketchbook pro from time to time) I'm not really the best person to give any recommendations for digital programs apart from the one I already do use.
Sorry dude.

I was just looking for for the answer to the question below, glad I didn't have to search too hard.

Observation and practice is harder than it sounds I guess. For almost the past year I've tried to really get into anatomy. I use many websites for pose studies every now and then, and a little less frequently draw from life(due to people never holding still for long enough to get my mind around a pose). I've managed to fill 2 sketchbooks completely during this year, which is far more than ever. I see improvement for sure, but no where near what I'd like. It's like I'm at a wall. When sketching from my head I just can't get anything that isn't generic and stiff, despite the slight improvements I've had. Maybe this just shows that I don't understand things enough yet, despite practicing. Most of the time when I come up with something I actually like, it's just dumb luck while going with the flow. It's no wonder I can't come up with cool character designs with detailed clothing and qualities...I don't even get the silhouettes down yet lol.

I guess the experience is actually the reason I really admire the commissions you and others have done, as well as a number of character creations I've seen here on dA.

Oh, btw, I appreciate the effort you put into responding and helping others out. Very few people I watch on dA do that. It's always nice to see, but I I understand that it takes up time.

I hope your progress in observation pays off in the end.
It's tough and if I knew of a way to help train that I would definitely try to help others out in it.

Another question Chamba...how did you master drawing anatomy and poses? Trying my best to get these two done but every time I finish it's a mess. How can I improve?

:iconthechamba:
theCHAMBA Featured By Owner Nov 18, 2012
master anatomy/poses = can't really ever 'master' it
You can improve at it, and that can be achieved by more observation and more practice.

I've been drawing since I can remember, so I can't really give you a solid number of years.
whether you could it from when I first picked a pencil up or when I decided this is what I wanted to do for life etc
can't really use others as a gauge, I feel.
Just know where you want to go and what you want to achieve.

Hey! I'm a student at the college for creative studies in Michigan and I am required to write a research paper about the comic book industry. If you would be so kind as to answer some more questions it would be greatly appreciated!

What is the work environment like?
Are there any specific qualifications needed to get into the industry?
What's the deal with job security or benefits?
Do you need to live close to the company you work for or can you work from home?

Any of these answers would be helpful and would mean a lot coming from you... thanks!
