Actually, depending on how you define a "sense," humans have anywhere between nine and twenty-one senses.

Well sight and hearing are pretty straightforward, but taste and smell are intimately linked and "touch" is a wide range of different senses, each of which is detected by a different kind of nerve ending. Thermoception (temperature), nociception (pain), pressure, vibration, all of these are different senses. Your sense of balance is a sense, and so is proprioception, which is your awarenes of your body in relation to itself. It's how know how to touch your fingertips together with outstretched arms even if you close your eyes. Hunger and thirst could be considered senses, acceleration, the need to relieve yourself, all could very well be considered senses in their own right.
