Neytiri Walkthrough - BFW- by theCHAMBA Neytiri Walkthrough - BFW- by theCHAMBA
BIG FILE WARNING

So this is a walkthrough of the Neytiri piece I posted yersterday.

excuse the massive size of the file but yeah.

Basic Rundown:

1) Unlevelled Rawscan - Drawn on A4 size printer paper using 4H and HB leads. I took a bit of liberty with the Anatomy, but aimed to try and get her face looking close to how she looks in the film.

2) Lineart cleaned and levelled - this process like the remainder of the steps done in PSCS3 using an Intuos2.

3) Base colour flats applied - All I do is basically trace around her outline, then fill in the areas with certain colours. This process is tedious, but has to be done.

4) Additional details added - Longest part of the whole thing. The pattern on her skin detail was quite tasking.

5) Background is created - lots of playing around w/ palettes.

6) Character and Final background touches.

7 - 9) Added highlights, shades and tints to the figure - I find this stage the most fun.

10) Applied secondary lighting.

11) Applied blurs and such - added the twang of her Bow, and some basic focus and movement blurs.

12) Final view after the addition of my tag and adding a slight glow.

Complete.

I can never seem to bring myself to do the shading as drastic as yours. Any suggestions maybe? Or just keep working on it.

By the way, nice picture. Looks like a lot of work went into it. Good movie too.

The highlights on her feathers and beads are a fabulous contrast to the dark shadows. Brilliant work. I kinda wish the arrow was still in her hands though. Feel like I just missed it

Lovin' the walk through. Quick question though; with the lineart that u drew with pencil, did u go over it again in photoshop in order to colour the lines, as im having difficulty using the layer 'darken' selection to create a line layer which, i can colour, as theres still the white around and inside the picture from scanning it in? Any advice would be really helpful :)

I don't go over em again.

Do check my PSD downloads on DA to see what I do with the lines.
I don't know if they'll be of help, but it may?

When you work, how many layers do you have. Is the amount different for comics?

I was told it's not good to have too many layers, otherwise the file gets too big. Do you ever that issue?

you can always flatten some layers together as you work... you dont always need to keep them all separate..

more layers = larger file.
as you've been told already it seems.

this is awesome.... but i still dont understand how you get such thin lines with a pencil...even if it is a whole paper....you must sharpen your pencil alot

Thank you for having her draw the arrow to her chin and not to her shoulder/chest. That is a huge pet peeve of mine as an archer.

I sincerely hope you don't find this rude (hopefully you know how much I respect and love your art). But about how long does it take you to do work like this? I usually find myself rushing and I often stop at steps far before 7 rather than proceed to the latter stages.

A ballpark area would really help me understand how production work normally takes and what to aim for post art college.

Thank you!
